Iran: Israel Past the 'Red Line'

Israel has already breached its own red line set by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu by acquiring "dozens of nuclear warheads," Iranian Defence Minister Ahmad Vahidi said on Saturday, the AFP news agency reports.

"If having the atomic bomb is passing the red line, the Zionist regime, that possesses dozens of nuclear warheads and weapons of mass destruction, has passed the red line years ago, and it has to be stopped," he said, according to the ISNA news agency.

Vahidi was responding to a speech by Netanyahu to the UN General Assembly this week in which -- using a cartoon bomb diagram -- the Israeli leader called for a "clear red line" to be applied to Iran's nuclear activities, which he charged are aimed at developing atomic weapons.

"Is the occupying and aggressor Zionist regime that possesses nuclear weapons more dangerous? Or an Iran that doesn't have nuclear weapons and which insists more than anybody on nuclear disarmament, and seeks only to have peaceful nuclear energy abiding by international rules," Vahidi asked.

Israel has maintained a policy of nuclear ambiguity, but is widely assumed to possess nuclear weapons.

It is a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency but has never signed the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

Iran insists its nuclear program is entirely peaceful and rejects Israel's accusations of military intent. However, Iranian leaders have repeatedly called to eliminate the Jewish state.

Concept Aquatic Rover May Explore a Lake On Titan

I'm going to complain here, because no-one else cares...

One of my pet hates is that when the media publishes a measurement, they will give both metric and imperial, and will calculate it to ridiculous significant figures.

For instance, this imaginary robot might weigh, you know, round about 100 kilo - which is 220.5 lbs! Yep, they know know the measurements to the nearest 10th of a pound, but coincidentally it happens to be a really round figure in metric terms.

Rant over. Feel free to ignore.

Debt or alive? Deficit hawks hope debate finally turns to borrowing

As Barack Obama and Mitt Romney gather Wednesday at the University of Denver for the first presidential debate, organizers of a new national campaign are making a push in Colorado to address an issue they say can't be ignored any longer ? the national debt.

At $16 trillion, the nation's debt is on a path to exceed 100 percent of the U.S. economy in the next decade and 200 percent by 2040, says the Campaign to Fix the Debt, a national effort with bipartisan support that hopes policymakers will finally summon the courage to deal with the country's out-of-whack finances.

The campaign was founded by former U.S. Sen. Alan Simpson, a Republican, and Erskine Bowles, a Democrat and a former Clinton administration official, and

is partners with the nonpartisan Committee for a Responsible Budget. The two were co-chairmen of Obama's National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform, which produced a set of recommendations that were never sent to Congress because of division on the commission.

But now, the pair's Fix the Debt campaign has been trying to drum up support for the effort at the state level, hoping respected names locally can light a fire under congressional delegations and provide them with moral support.

"I personally believe that this debt is nation-threatening," says former Gov. Dick Lamm, a Democrat who's backing the campaign in Colorado. "The only way I can see to do this (solve the problem) is to try to get the political establishment some backbone and courage."

He's joined by former state Sen. Norma Anderson, a Republican.

"I'm concerned not for myself ? I'll be dead before it affects me ? but for my children and grandchildren," Anderson said.

Her message to politicians: "You need to do something about it, and we will help you."

Organizers hope to get even more of Colorado's noted statesmen involved in the effort.

Maya MacGuineas, president of the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget and an organizer of Fix the Debt, said she has gone to dinner parties for years where people's eyes glazed over as soon as she told them her work involved the federal debt. But that's changing, she said.

"People are coming to us and asking, 'How can we help?' " MacGuineas said. "It used to be that people who called me were people who'd seen me on C-Span.

"It feels like this is one of those moments in our country's history where you're going to do the right thing or you're not."

Fix the Debt says unchecked debt will slow the nation's economic growth, limiting the budget flexibility of future generations to respond to crises ranging from natural disasters to security threats.

Lamm says a question he would like to ask the presidential candidates is: "Be honest with the American public: Is there any way out of this without pain?"

There are multiple reasons for the country's staggering debt, including the fact that it has fought two wars for a decade, cut taxes at the same time and then entered the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression ? and then spent more trying to save the economy through government bailouts and stimulus packages.

Romney has criticized Obama for not cutting the deficit in half, as the president said he would do in early 2009.

Obama's plan would allow the Bush-era tax cuts to expire for households making more than $250,000 a year and would impose other tax increases on wealthier Americans to the tune of about $1.5 trillion. The conservative-leaning Tax Foundation says Obama's plan is out of step "with any commonly held notion of tax reform," including the Simpson-Bowles recommendations.

The group said the president's plan "fails to spur the economy, ultimately resulting in insufficient tax revenue and perpetual deficits."

But critics say Romney's plan for dealing with spending deficits is bereft of critical details on what programs or "tax loopholes" he would specifically cut. The left-leaning Center on Budget and Policy Priorities says Romney's proposal to cap total federal spending at 20 percent of GDP would "necessitate very large cuts in Medicaid, education, health research and other programs."

And an analysis from online publication Business Insider says, "The idea that the Romney plan will ease our debt and deficit problem is laughable. Under almost any realistic scenario, it will make the problem worse."

High School Basketball Power Forward

Now we're starting to move to the center of the High School basketball court. We've left the guards in their outer orbit as they dribble, drive, and shoot with skill. We've also added considerable heft to the small forward and brought the position in tighter to the basketball with more back to the basket skills. Let's take a look at what makes for a good power forward at the high school basketball level. Just a hint...it's power.

It's almost unfair. The other team doesn't really know what to do. Your point guard keeps bringing the ball down and after some baseline picks and a quick shuffle, the power forward on your team jockeying for position just outside the block. He's way too deep for good measure and the adjoining defensive player didn't rotate over quick enough to cut off the pass. In drops the pass to the power forward who seizes it with both hands and looks over his shoulder to see what his next step is going to be. He kicks the ball back out to the shooting guard and wrestles another foot or two further into the defensive player's space. Back in comes the pass to you but now you're deep in enemy territory. You flex back to clear some room and the defensive player gets knocked back despite his best efforts. You dribble hard as you pivot left and right looking for a weakness...a feeling of give on the other players body. You sense he's off balance a bit and you see the other defensive player coming in to double. It's now or never...you clear more space with your left hip, drive your shoulder into the chest of the defensive player without overdoing it and find your self with a foot of space. That's all you need. You go up strong and bring the ball out and over against the backboard. It drops in as the defender reels from the chest punch he just took. It's going to be a long night.

The power forward or #4 is almost self-explanatory. Height is generally a concern with the power forward but less though than with the center since some people just play bigger than they are. Think Charles Barkley. At the high school basketball level, some players are just really strong regardless of height and they combine this with a tenacity and toughness that makes for a good power forward. It's the linebacker of the high school basketball scene. They earn their keep around the paint with moves to the back, short drives to the hoop, the occasional short shot and lots of rebounds. A good power forward finds himself at the line quite a bit so a good foul shot percentage can quickly add points to the total and also thin out the defensive players or at least take the fight out of them as they get into foul trouble. The power forward works well with the center which makes sense since they occupy the same general territory. Back picks and communication between two bigs can be extremely effective at the high school level.

The power forward position can be difficult to place well since you typically have lots of dribblers and shooters but a person with solid footwork in post position is rarer. These skills tend to come with time and there's not always enough time by high school to perfect an inside game beyond maybe a turn around jumper. With time, a power forward can develop drop steps, up and unders, and a whole selection of pre-defined moves to either get his shot or get fouled. The power forward also does a great deal of one on one play in isolation against a defender. That isn't to say that plays aren't designed around the power forward but the benefit of a good player in this position is the ability to just drop the ball down into them and have them go to work. If they're crafty, strong, and aggressive, a high school basketball power forward can do some real damage.

Asia stocks up after Spain pledges to cut spending

BANGKOK (AP) ? Asian stock markets rose Friday after Spain announced severe budget cuts meant to show international lenders and investors that the country is making progress toward getting its debt under control.

The Spanish government on Thursday unveiled a draft budget for 2013 that cuts overall spending by ?40 billion ($51 billion). Wall Street spurted higher on the news.

Stocks were also helped by speculation that China's central bank will act soon to help the world's No. 2 economy.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index rose 0.3 percent to 20,825.01. South Korea's Kospi added nearly 0.3 percent to 1,993.44 and Australia's S&P/ASX 200 gained 0.1 percent to 4,388.90.

But Japan's Nikkei 225 index lost 0.3 percent to 8,919.44, sinking on a government report that showed industrial production fell a further 1.3 percent in August.

Weak global and domestic demand is weighing on manufacturers, particularly electronics makers, who are facing intense competition from South Korean, Taiwanese and other Asian manufacturers. The strong yen, which erodes overseas earnings and makes Japanese-made products relatively more expensive, is also eating into profits.

Wall Street stocks posted their first gain of the week, despite mixed data on the U.S. economy.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 0.5 percent to 13,485.97. The S&P 500 index rose 1 percent to 1,447.15. The Nasdaq composite index rose 1.4 percent to 3,136.60.

The U.S. government said the overall economy grew at a slower annual rate in the April-through-June quarter than it previously estimated. Companies cut orders for durable goods last month. But the number of Americans seeking unemployment benefits fell.

Benchmark oil for November delivery was up 46 cents to $92.31 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose $1.87 to finish at $91.85 on the Nymex on Thursday.

In currencies, the euro rose to $1.2936 from $1.2917 late Thursday in New York. The dollar fell to 77.52 yen from 77.62 yen.

Joan Rivers at DPAC | Triangle Arts and Entertainment

JoanRivers Can We Talk?: Joan Rivers Will Unleash Her Zingers at Durham Performing Arts Center on Sept. 28th

On Friday night, Emmy-winner Joan Rivers will delight DPAC patrons with her patented mixture of violets and vitriol

The Durham Performing Arts Center will present award-winning 79-year-old stand-up comedienne, actress, author, and reality-TV personalitypersonality Joan Rivers at 8 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 28th, in its 2,700-seat, state-of-the-art theater, in the American Tobacco District in downtown Durham, NC. Among many other honors, Rivers is a five-time Daytime Emmy Award nominee, who won the Outstanding Talk Show Host Emmy in 1990 for ?The Joan Rivers Show? (1989-93).

Born Joan Alexandra Molinsky on June 8, 1933, the daughter of Russian Jews who immigrated to Brooklyn, NY, Joan Rivers is famous for her raspy voice, waspish wit, and fearless, freewheeling, no-holds-barred commentary about her own foibles ? especially her multiple visits to the plastic surgeon ? and the foibles of her fellow celebrities, especially Hollywood types, whom she mercilessly skewers in her trademark New York accent.

Fifty-eight-year-old Brad Zimmerman, who describes himself as a ?Comedian, award-winning rapper, fantasy nerd, and reluctant grown-up,? will open the show; and Joan Rivers will start the fur flying at approximately 8:20 p.m.

According to the star?s official biography:

?Joan Rivers is an internationally renowned comedienne, Emmy-winning television talk show host, Tony-nominated actress, television talk-show host, best-selling author, playwright, screenwriter, motion-picture director, columnist, lecturer, syndicated radio host, jewelry designer, and cosmetic-company entrepreneur and most importantly, a proud mother and grandmother.

?Joan has enjoyed an illustrious career spanning more than four decades. She is currently on E! Entertainment Television hosting the network?s popular franchise ?Fashion Police,? covering red carpet style for the annual awards season, as well as hosting E!?s popular ?Fashion Police? weekly series. Joan has also taken over the reality TV circuit with her daughter Melissa [Joan Rivers] in their weekly series on WEtv, called ?Joan and Melissa: Joan Knows Best?? This ultimate mother/daughter duo address the question plaguing daughters since the beginning of time: Does mother really know best?

?In 2009, she starred in NBC?s hit reality series ?The Celebrity Apprentice,? emerging as the Season Two winner. Her critically acclaimed documentary, Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work premiered in theater?s nationwide [in 2010] and is available on DVD. She also celebrated the publication of two critically acclaimed, best-selling books: Men Are Stupid and They Like Big Boobs: A Woman?s Guide to Beauty Through Plastic Surgery [2008] and Murder at the Academy Awards: A Red Carpet Murder Mystery [2009]. Her new book I Hate Everyone ? Starting with Me [2012], published by Penguin ? hit bookstores [in] June.

?Joan made television history as the first sole guest host of ?The Tonight Show [Starring Johnny Carson].? Her own ?The Late Show Starring Joan Rivers? helped launch the Fox Network in 1986. In 1989, she returned to daytime television with ?The Joan Rivers Show,? winning an Emmy Award for Outstanding Talk Show Host and her own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame [at 7030 Hollywood Blvd.].

?From her signature question ?Can we talk?? (A Federal trademark) to her red-carpet mantra ?Who are you wearing?? the woman who asks the questions get the answers America ? and the world ? wants to hear. Her most joyous triumph is being grandmother to Melissa?s son, Cooper (Edgar Cooper Endicott), who was born on December 1, 2000.?

According to Brad Zimmerman?s website:

?Brad Zimmerman is a very unique and original voice in the world of comedy. Watch a few minutes of his comedy and you will know you have never seen anything like Brad. He works all over the country, doing theaters, comedy clubs, casino?s, country clubs, comedy festivals, JCC?s. I mean, you name it, he?s done it.

?[Zimmerman] has worked with many well-known comedians and entertainers, such as Brad Garrett, Dennis Miller, Susie Essman, Julio Inglesias, and has been Joan Rivers? opening act of choice for over seven years. In fact, Joan has said ?I?ve had three great opening acts in my lifetime: Billy Crystal, Garry Shandling, and Brad Zimmerman.?

?In the year 2006, Brad had the great honor of opening for George Carlin, and that relationship lasted until George passed away in 2008. The first time Brad opened for George, at the Paramount Theatre, just outside Chicago, right after finishing his act, George approached Brad backstage, and said, as only George could have said, ?f**kin great!?

?Brad combines years of acting training and standup, which is evident in Brad?s true pride and joy; his one-man show. It is called My Son the Waiter, a Jewish Tragedy, and he has been working on it since 2005.

?In this part stand-up/part theatrical piece, Brad tells a story of one man?s lengthy ? and we do mean lengthy ? struggle to make it as an actor in New York. His send-ups on his childhood, his family, his misbegotten love life, and his career are as warm and poignant as they are hysterical. He has done the show all over the country, and will be doing it in New York this coming fall.

?[Zimmerman's] hopes are that this first New York experience will lead to a long New York run at some hip Off-Broadway theater. In addition to this show, Brad has done work in both television and film, most notably playing Johnny Sack?s lawyer in one of the best television shows of all time: ?The Sopranos.??

The Durham Performing Arts Center presents JOAN RIVERS at 8 p.m. Sept. 28 at DPAC, in the American Tobacco District, at 123 Vivian St., Durham, North Carolina 27701.

Communication Items You'll Want Before TSHTF ? Part 1

Surviving Survivalism

Having good radio equipment is important for many reasons. What will you do when there is no Internet? What will you do when there is no cellphone service? How will you know what?s going on in other parts of the country, let alone the world? Radio signals don?t need an intermediary, they just bounce all over the earth and are received by radios.

?

?

It?s not even necessary that you transmit (speak) on the radio, but the information you can garner from just listening to others from far away is worth the time it takes to understand how to use a radio.

There are many ways to go in purchasing a communications radio, depending on your budget. You can buy yourself a brand new, state-of-the-art Kenwood or I-com for example, both of which are great radios. But the expense can be quite high, typically in the many hundreds of dollars.

A less expensive but just as viable way to go is a ?free band radio?. This is a 10 meter ham radio that has had additional freeband frequencies installed. This will expand coverage to include the 12, 11 (the CB frequency band) and sometimes 9 meter bands. In a converted CB radio, this is called a radio with extra channels.

A 10 meter radio is very common and inexpensive, as well as their low-rent cousins, CB radios. Many can be found on ebay for under $200 and may already have the additional frequencies installed. Also any good SSB (single side band) CB radio can have what they call ?Extra Channels Added? by any good tech. (Lots of mods here?http://www.dxzone.com/tag-cb-mods/.) CB shops at truck stops often times have used free band radios for sale at good prices, but check Ebay for prices on used radios before going.

Any frequency on the radio can be used in various modes, the most common being AM, Single Side Band (SSB), Upper Side Band (USB) and CW. CW means constant wave mode, which is the mode used for Morse Code and RTTY. It is possible to send several and receive multiple pages of text files via RTTY. The software needed can be found here (http://gmfsk.sourceforge.net/?). Radios with a CW mode like the RCI 2950 (et al) and the Uniden HR2510 have the CW mode installed. There are other models that also have CW mode, however no CB radios have CW mode. You can send pictures and text files to others, similar to a fax. This will be an excellent way for the people to maintain contact with others during times of crisis or total collapse.

The legal frequency range of a Citizens Band radio is 26905 megahertz through 27405 megahertz (mostly in 10 kilocycle steps per channel), covering the 40 channels of CB radio. Freebanding is when an unlicensed radio operator uses the non-allocated frequencies in the 11 meter band (CB radio and beyond). When society has collapsed, who care who has a license?

Most freebanders use the Single Side Band (SSB) mode of these channels as opposed to the AM mode. The chatter you may have heard on channel 19 (the truckers channel) is in the AM mode. AM mode of operation is limited in range, however using the SSB mode affords greater range and more output power. A legal CB radio has 4 watts output on the AM band and 12 watts on the SSB band.

This means that when conditions are right (sunspots, etc.) SSB signals can travel greater distances than those in the AM mode. One early morning, while driving west on I-90 in Idaho, I made a contact with Tokyo, Japan using SSB and a HR 2510 Uniden radio. That was a contact of over 7000 miles with less than 20 watts of power.

Once the world goes in to collapse there will still be thousands of people using the freebands. This can be used to create a radio round-robin or?relay?to share information and help others.

The international call frequencies are:

27555 USB The US and the world except for Europe

26285 USB Europe

First a little bit about how to use a call frequency. A call frequency is a frequency on which we make contact with someone who would like to have a conversation with us. The parties then go to another frequency of their choice to continue the conversation. It is unlike the chatter you may have heard on the AM side ? CB Channel 19 and all that noise. The conversation is called a QSO.

First we must wait for a moment of silence to break in and make our call. The protocol for asking for a QSO is like this:

?C-Q, C-Q, NEW MEXICO CALLING AND LISTING ON 27560? is a typical call or CQ (?seek-you?). This tells listeners on the call frequency where to find you to have a conversation. Then we move our frequency dial to that frequency. Once there we make another call like this:

?CQ CQ New Mexico calling for any and all stations.? Or if your are looking to make a contact in a specific place:

?CQ CQ New Mexico Calling for all stations in _____? (the place of your choosing) ?and standing by for contact.?

Antennas

There are many different kinds of viable antennas to use with your radio, some very cheap some very expensive.

Some of you may choose to make a wire antenna. One of the simplest wire antennas is the ?Inverted V? ? very good for long distance communications (what the radio community calls ?skip?). The inverted V can be made for the cost of some wire and a pole.

Others may prefer to purchase something ready made, in a box. For those of you who do, we can strongly suggest the ?V Quad?. This is a directional aluminum antenna that sends a strong signal in only one direction. Like the directional TV antennas of past times, this antenna needs a rotor (this is a motor to turn the antenna from the radio shack or you can use the ?armstrong? method). It is the best non-homebrew antenna that I have ever used.?http://www.livecbradio.com/11-meter-loop-antenna.htm

Either way, when the conditions are right you?ll be talking to the world.

When radio operators say, ?conditions are right? they mean that the skip conditions are good, allowing the radio signals to be received over longer distances than normal. Skip is when the signal travels along a mostly horizontal plane before it eventually hits the ionosphere. Like a flat rock across a lake, the signal will skip along rather than pierce the ionosphere and go out into space. This skip can cause your signal to be received with nearly as much strength as it had when it left your antenna. The contact I had with Tokyo gave me an S10 signal strength, and that is as high as it gets. Sunspots are generally the cause for good skip conditions.

Coming up in Part 2 ? Family Radio Service, Business Radio Service and Scanners.

Rumors about Google Maps app for iOS intensify, claim it's still months away from launch

Rumors about Google Maps app for iOS intensify, claim it's still months away from launch

If you're unsatisfied with Apple's current iOS 6 Maps experience and are hoping to jump back into Google's loving arms then take a breath and sit down -- it could be a little while. Separately, The Verge and New York Times have heard from unnamed sources that a standalone Google Maps app on iOS is launching, but may not be ready until the end of the year. The reason for the delay? Unlike some previous rumors that claimed Apple may be stalling on the approval an already submitted app, they indicate Google did not know of Cupertino's plans to launch its own solution this year until it was publicly announced in June, since their contract extended into 2013. According to one of the NYT sources, another issue could be Google's desire to include 3D imagery from Google Earth in any standalone effort to compete with Apple's native features. All of this follows a statement Google Chairman Eric Schmidt made in Japan last night that it had "not done anything yet" regarding Google Maps on iOS. So, if you've upgraded to iOS 6, are you sticking with the new app or trying to find some other way to avoid navigation related mishaps until Gmaps is back?

New ID laws could delay outcome of close election

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The presidential election is Nov. 6, but it could take days to determine the winner if the vote is close, thanks to new voting laws that will probably increase the number of people who have to cast provisional ballots in key states.

Tight races for Congress, governor and local offices also could be stuck in limbo while election officials scrutinize ballots.

Voters cast provisional ballots for a variety of reasons: They don't bring proper ID to the polls; they fail to update their voter registration after moving; they try to vote at the wrong precinct; or someone challenges their right to vote.

These voters may have their votes counted, but only if election officials verify that they were eligible to vote, a process that can take days or weeks.

NEWTOWN SQUARE, Penn., September 26, 2012 Despite just modest gains in population and participation in outdoor recreation compared to the rest of the nation, there is a strong likelihood of increasing pressure on forest and other undeveloped lands in northern states as the population grows and recreation demands shift.

"Outdoor Recreation in the Northern United States," a report recently published by the U.S. Forest Service's Northern Research Station as GTR NRS-100, evaluates recent population trends and forecasts within the context of other U.S. regions, demographic composition of population, recreation participation by residents age 16 and older, trends in activities and time spent outdoors by its youth, and the changes occurring in recreation resources, both public and private. "Outdoor Recreation" is part of the ongoing Northern Forest Futures Project in which scientists are describing current forest conditions and projecting future conditions in the 20 states extending from Maine to Minnesota and from Missouri to Maryland. The publication is available at: http://nrs.fs.fed.us/pubs/41528

"More people engaging in outdoor recreation is a wonderful thing, but it also translates into greater demand for venues for outdoor recreation and a dilemma for the North's shrinking supply of undeveloped lands," said Michael T. Rains, Director of the Northern Research Station. "The Northern Forest Futures Project is generating information that will help natural resource managers and communities respond to this challenge."

By 2060, Federal and State parkland per person in northern states is projected to decrease to 0.13 acres, about 79 percent of the 2008 level. Currently, more than 31 percent of total land area in the North is non-Federal forest, or 1.19 acres per person. By 2060, per capita non-Federal forest is predicted to decrease to 0.88 acres per person, or 74 percent of the 2010 level, lower than all other regions and the Nation as a whole. Less than 3 percent of Federal land, about 17.9 million acres, is in the North, and about 69 percent of that is managed by the Forest Service.

Meanwhile, the population of northern states is steadily, if slowly, increasing. Between 1990 and 2009, total population in the North grew 11 percent, less than half the national growth of 23 percent. Projected growth for the North is expected to be 26 percent, much less than other regions of the nation.

While the increase in total outdoor recreation participants and total activity days was also lower than the national rate, northern states saw an increase of about 4 percent, from about 90 to 94 million, in people ages 16 and older who engage in outdoor recreation.

The activities people are pursuing outdoors are broadening from traditional sports like hunting and fishing to include activities such as orienteering, snowboarding, kayaking, off-highway-vehicle driving, and mountain biking. The report notes that new outdoor activities will undoubtedly emerge as the 21st century continues to unfold.

Today, the most popular activities in the North are walking for pleasure, attending family gatherings outdoors, gardening or landscaping, viewing/ photographing natural scenery, visiting outdoor nature centers, and picnicking. Activities oriented toward viewing and photographing nature (scenery, flowers/trees/other plants, birds, and wildlife) have been among the fastest growing in popularity.

Contrary to the widely held notion that children in today's United States are not spending time outdoors, the National Kids Survey results used in the report suggest that kids may actually spend quite a bit of time outdoors, even though significant numbers are using electronic devices when doing so.

###

The mission of the U.S. Forest Service is to sustain the health, diversity, and productivity of the nation's forests and grasslands to meet the needs of present and future generations. The agency manages 193 million acres of public land, provides assistance to state and private landowners, and maintains the largest forestry research organization in the world. The mission of the Forest Service's Northern Research Station is to improve people's lives and help sustain the natural resources in the Northeast and Midwest through leading-edge science and effective information delivery.

Justice yanks plan to collect indecency fine - Biederman Blog

There were bachelor and bachelor-ette parties, strippers and whipped cream. And while the portrayals, many pixilated, proved sufficiently graphic to have aroused blue-penciled government censors, in the end, it wasn?t just clothes on-screen that got dropped. The Justice Department has yanked its suit against Fox Broadcasting for failing to pay a Federal Communications Commission ?(FCC) indecency fine stemming from a 2003 Fox show ?Married with America.? The FCC slapped Fox with more than $1 million in fines after its stations aired a racy episode showcasing exotic dancers. Fox and the feds, ultimately, were disputing a few thousand dollars in fines over the terpsichorean entertainment. But that was before the Supremes stepped in over the summer on indecent broadcasting. Let?s strip to the facts in this case:

In June, the U.S. Supreme Court?held that the FCC could not?enforce current policies against past transgressions and must give ?fair notice? before taking action against ?fleeting expletives??and nudity on live or scripted television programs.?The court noted the FCC had offered rules against fleeting expletives in 2004, one year later than when?the indecent actions?charged against Fox and ABC occurred.? Justice Anthony Kennedy wrote ?A fundamental principle in our legal system is that laws which regulate persons or entities must give fair notice of conduct that is forbidden or required.?? The broadcasters lacked notice in 2003 that brief nudity or fleeting expletives could be actionable, so the FCC violated their rights to due process under the Fifth Amendment.

?Fleeting expletives? are nonscripted verbal or visual indecencies expressed during a live broadcast. The high court, in FCC v. Pacifica Foundation, the 1978?landmark case involving?the ?Seven Words You Can Never Say on Television,? defined?indecency as ?language or material that, in context, depicts or describes, in terms patently offensive as measured by contemporary community standards for the broadcast medium, sexual or excretory organs or activities.?

The problem is that the justices, overturning? a federal appeals court finding in favor of the networks in 2009, ruled that the FCC is allowed to regulate the use of fleeting expletives on television. The Court did not settle the First Amendment question regarding censorship of broadcasts by a federal agency?but rather?suggested this should be?dealt with?by a Federal Appeals Court.? In 2010, the Second Circuit called the FCC ?fleeting expletive? policy unconstitutionally vague.? This past?July, the Supreme Court again dodged the issue when it held that the FCC could not charge the networks because of fair notice?and due process concerns.

With Justice bowing out of the Fox fine, it remains for yet another day for the First Amendment question to be settled and there have been no new indecency cases put up since Julius ?Genachowski, the current FCC chair, was appointed by President Obama in 2009. The FCC regulates interstate and international communications by radio, television, wire, satellite and cable.??This independent agency, overseen by Congress,?has five commissioners, each appointed by the president and confirmed by the Senate, each with five-year terms, and only three? of whom?can be affiliated with any?particular political party at the same time.? Chief among the FCC?s missions?are the promotion of ?competition, innovation, and investment in broadband services and facilities? and the support of ?the nation?s economy by ensuring an appropriate competitive framework for the unfolding of the communications revolution.?

Genachowski, who has talked about broadband internet facilitation and preserving Internet free speech and free enterprise, said of the most recent Justice decision: ?In the wake of the Supreme Court?s decision in Fox v. FCC, the commission is reviewing its indecency enforcement policy to ensure the agency carries out Congress?s directive in a manner consistent with vital First Amendment principles.?

Amazon launches Vinecom for shoppers who live life on the 'green' edge

Love Amazon's renowned two-day shipping? How about organic eats and other miscellaneous environment-friendly products? If so, then today's your very lucky day. Adding to the endless list of shopping sites it already owns, Amazon has just introduced Vine.com; a site which aims to be a one-stop web store for folks looking to snag anything from organic ingredients to beauty products like all-natural shaving oils and Kiss My Face foam soaps -- and yes, as we stated earlier, there's an option to get that speedy two-day delivery service. While chatting with Bits Blog, a Vine representative said the goal isn't "necessarily about saving the planet," but that his team does "feel the products are useful in that regard." Currently Vine.com is live in beta form, though that doesn't mean folks interested can't go browse around and order some goodies -- to do that, give the source link below a quick tap.

BYOD Security: And Now For The Good News! | Business ...

While there is a lot of research about the sudden growth of mobile business usage, much of it being driven by the explosion in ?Bring Your Own Device? (BYOD), a trend that while understandable from the user?s perspective, is giving IT departments the world over the shivers.

Protecting the organisation from security breaches ? which are often caused inadvertently by the users ? has long been a big challenge and it has suddenly taken on a whole new dimension with employees and contractors introducing their own tablets and smartphones into the workplace, in effect blurring the lines between personal and business computing devices.

Ninety percent of enterprises have already deployed mobile devices, with smartphones being most widely deployed, according to a survey by Gartner [User Survey Analysis: Impact of Mobile Devices on Network and Data Center Infrastructure, May 2012].

A further 86% of enterprises surveyed said that they plan to deploy media tablets this year. With the proliferation of BYOD, there are many security issues for enterprises to consider before they invest in mobile computing. According to the survey, the top issues were ?use of privately owned devices? and ?deployment of new enterprise mobile platforms?.

So it is hardly surprising that IT directors and managers in many organisations ? both large and small ? are hesitating before taking the plunge into truly embracing the concept of the mobile enterprise. However, the genie is well and truly out of the bottle, so like it or not, enterprises are going to have to face this problem head on and sooner rather than later.

Also, another way to look at the exponential growing of business mobile usage is whether it could actually be good news, helping to improve productivity by making better use of existing applications and services in which organisations have already invested. However, as they are traditionally hard to access on mobile devices, companies are not making maximum use of them.

That all changes with the latest wave of mobile applications or services that have been adapted or developed to deal with the BYOD wave. A good example of this is Microsoft SharePoint, which has until recently been cumbersome to access on mobile devices, yet has represented a massive investment for organisations the world over. New products have removed this barrier, making SharePoint simple and secure to access, thus helping CIOs and IT directors to recoup better return-on-investment and improve user engagement.

Of course, that does not negate the security challenge, so before enterprises can truly exploit BYOD to their own advantage, what needs to happen? Mobile security is a hugely complex and oft-debated topic, and there is also the challenge of balancing accessibility and flexibility against strong security measures. Make security too tough and employees will encounter usability problems.

So what does work? At my company we?ve invested a lot of time and effort working out what constitutes mobile security best practice and have had that independently validated. So, here are my top pieces of advice in what to look for in a secure BYOD app.

1. Authentication

CIOs need to realise that an employee using a mobile device to access corporate systems is essentially an external user, as far as authenticating securely across the firewall is concerned. Make sure that your mobile applications vendor is able to support (or recommend) the authentication regime that works best for your organisation, whether that is using federated profiles, token-based authentication, 2-factor or forms-based authentication, for example.

2. Encryption

It is advisable to minimise the amount of content or data stored on the mobile device, but if it has to be so, ensure that it is properly encrypted. 256-bit SSL encryption should be the standard to aim for.

3. Zero footprint

Let?s face facts, people are always going to leave their devices lying around. So, inisist on ?zero footprint?: in other words, no corporate data or content is left on a smartphone or tablet.

4. Single sign-on

Something that vendors often struggle to achieve, but something that enterprises should be demanding. For instance, if SharePoint users have single sign-on to multiple SharePoint sites, then they only need to remember one user-name and password to access their mobile SharePoint world.

5. Don?t go native

Some of the world?s leading analysts have begun to query the sense of native apps. If you choose mobile web apps, then they can still act like a native app to keep users happy, but they support ?zero footprint? and also make it a lot easier to manage user and administration rights (which is vital for efficient security strategies).

Purchasing, deploying and ensuring that users have downloaded the latest software version are all challenges that CIOs will face with native apps in the enterprise. Some mobile web applications are able to incorporate device features previously only available through native apps, like accessing the device?s GPS functions, camera, alerts and notifications and placing an application badge/icon on the device home screen.

If IT departments can get their workforce using applications like SharePoint better on mobile devices, then the mobile security headache could actually be a saving grace. Of course, that depends on having extremely robust security measures, without limiting access or usability, but the technology and techniques are all there: it?s just a question of researching the best fit for the organisation in question.

Fiona Apple explains jail time to fans in odd speech

Jailed last week in Sierra Blanca, TX for possession of marihuana and hashish, Fiona Apple has been a bad bad girl. But she says that's just the beginning of the story.

Apple, 35, told her at her first post-jail concert fans on Friday that people in jail were friendly for the most part. But there were a few unnamed exceptions... and she had a message for them.

"Most of the people were very nice to me. There are four of you out there," Apple said on stage in Houston, Texas on Friday, "and I want you to know that I heard everything you did. I wrote it all down with your names and everything you did and said stupidly thinking that I couldn't hear or see you."

She claimed to have ripped the paper up but not before she "encoded it."

"I got two lockboxes. We'll call them holding cell one and holding cell two. In holding cell one is the encoded version of the s--- that you did and I know is inappropriate and probably illegal," she explained. "In holding cell two is the decoder."

Apple threatened that she open the "holding cells" to expose all the negative things these people did.

"I'll f---ing make you famous anytime you ask and I'll open those boxes. Till then, stay in your f---ing holding cell," Apple said.

The "guy who runs the jail," on the other hand, was very nice to Apple. She didn't name him because he isn't interested in fame, she said.

She apologized to him for being "attitudey."

#ScratchGate: iPhone 5 Owners Are Discovering Aluminum Is Softer Than Glass

iphoneThe iPhone 5 hit stores last Friday. It's the lightest, thinnest, most sleek iPhone yet. But owners are quickly discovering that with those advantages, there are some inherent downsides. The slender iPhone 5 has an anodized aluminum backplate rather than one made of Corning glass as in the iPhone 4/4S. And since aluminum is a relatively soft material, the iPhone 5 shows more wear and tear than previous models. The iPhone 4 was a magnet for fingerprints. The iPhone 5 attracts scratches and scrapes nearly as easily.

Pubblicato il bollettino straordinario MS12-063 su Internet Explorer relativo al Microsoft Security Advisory 2757760

[English readers: you can find English links in this post for your convenience]

Maggiori dettagli tecnici per professionisti IT:

Il riepilogo degli aggiornamenti di settembre, che include questo rilascio straordinario, ? disponibile a questo link

e il bollettino con i dettagli tecnici:

  • [EN/IT] MS12-063 - Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (2744842)

Mi raccomando aggiornate, aggiornate e fate aggiornare passando parola!
