A toddler found all alone in a field after being swept 16km by a tornado, which killed the rest of her family, has died, US officials say.

Angel Babcock died at 11.10am (NZT) of a traumatic brain injury she suffered when the tornado ripped through her family's New Pekin home in Indiana, said Deputy Coroner R.D. Jones.

Yesterday officials acknowledged the deaths of the toddler's parents, Joseph Babcock, 21; and Moriah Brough, 20; and her siblings, Jaydon Babcock, 2, and Kendall Babcock, 2 months.

Angel's grandfather Jack Brough said yesterday she was in a "extremely critical condition. She's had a lot of injuries to her head."

"We took off towards Moriah's house to get them, and then the tornado siren went off," Jack Brough said. "... I told Kendra to call Moriah and tell her to take the kids and get out of their trailer, and she said they were going to go to the house next door."

Brough and his daughter waited-out the storm and later, after going downtown, learned people had been seriously injured by the storms near Moriah's house.

"We got in the car and started driving and as we got closer and closer, the whole area was flattened," he said. "I kept saying, 'Oh my God! Oh my God!' I was breathing so hard. I couldn't see my daughter's trailer for nothing. It was gone."

Angel died in a children's hospital in Louisville, after being found alone in the field in Indiana.
