In recent weeks, members of the Occupy movement around the state have said they plan to caucus with Republicans but write-in ?uncommitted? to express dissatisfaction with the current candidate pool.
In response, some county GOP chairpersons, including Cory Adams, of Story County, and Mac McDonald, of Black Hawk County, said they did not plan to count those votes.
?I talked with the Republican Party of Iowa to see if they knew about people trying to count ?no commitment? or ?none of the above,?? Adams said Friday. ?They have changed procedures since then.?
Adams said he never received an official memo from the party on caucus voting procedures but indicated the party?s move to allow ?uncommitted? votes is its way of adapting to changing political circumstances.
In a statement, the party said it plans to report votes for Michele Bachmann, Herman Cain, Newt Gingrich, Jon Huntsman, Ron Paul, Rick Perry, Buddy Roemer, Mitt Romney, Rick Santorum, ?No Preference? and ?Other.?
?From the start, the party always had plans and every intention to count all the votes that are cast,? said Nicole Sizemore, assistant communications director for the state GOP. ?It might have just been a miscommunication or misunderstanding, but the state party itself always planned on counting all the votes.?
Sizemore said the state party?s caucus organizers have kept communication open with county and prescient caucus chairs to ?make sure everyone is on the same page.?The Republican caucuses are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 3.
