Use Tim Ferriss' Four-Step Process to Master New Skills

Use Tim Ferriss' Four-Step Process to Master New SkillsIf you read Lifehacker you're probably familiar with Tim Ferriss the best-selling author and human guinea pig who will do just about anything to make life more efficient and acheive his goals. In his new book The Four Hour Chef Ferriss shares with corporate weblog Business Insider his key to learning skills as diverse as body hacking, business development, and amassing languages with his four step system: Deconstruct, Selection, Sequencing, and Stakes.

Let's say Tim wants to learn a martial art. He would first deconstruct the art down into the minimum learnable units, the building blocks that make up the overall discipline he wishes to learn. Next he will utilize the 80/20 rule to select which blocks make up the 20% of subject matter that will take him 80% of the way to competency. He must then sequence in which order to learn those blocks and finally setup stakes to create consequences, make sure he follows the program, and tests his growing facility. Perhaps in this case it would be entering a martial arts tournament.

Ferriss also points out that it is important to track your data so you can figure out points of failure and measure your progress. This broad overview of skill acquisition can apply to nearly any subject.

London sale features Elvis Presley's Rolex

LONDON (AP) ? A watch which was one of Elvis Presley's last Christmas presents and a corset worn by Madonna on her 1990 "Blond Ambition" tour will be featured at a London auction.

The watch, estimated to sell for 6,000 pounds ($9,500) or more, is a diamond-set Rolex given to Presley by his longtime manager, Tom Parker. It is engraved, "Elvis merry Christmas your pal Col. Tom Parker." It was the last Christmas for Presley, who died the following year.

Madonna's corset by Jean-Paul Gaultier is of green silk with conical cups and beaded fringe, embroidered with candy stripes of opalescent sequins and peppermint bugle beads.

Christie's estimates that the corset will sell for at least 10,000 pounds.

Christie's previewed the sale on Friday. The auction will be on Thursday.

Disney Research robot plays catch and juggles with humans, won't replace their parents (update: cameras explained!)

Disney Research robot catches and juggles with its human lackeys, won't replace our parents video

It's entirely possible for robots to juggle or play catch. They've usually been relegated to playing with their own kind, however, which is as good an excuse as any for Disney Research to experiment with a ball-tossing robot tailored to games with humans. The animatronic creation uses a depth-aware motion camera -- there's conflicting mentions of using both the Microsoft Kinect and ASUS' Xtion Pro Live that we're hoping to sort out -- to track any mid-air balls as well as throw them back to a human participant. Disney's robot does more than just move the robot's arm to account for imperfect tosses, too, as it knows to feign a dejected look after a botched reception. The company suggests that its invention would ideally bring two-way interaction to theme parks, so it's more likely to show up at Disneyland before it stands in for a parent in the backyard. It's just as well; when the Robopocalypse comes, the last thing we'll want at home is a machine that can toss grenades.

Update: Team member Jens Kober has filled us in on just why both cameras are mentioned. The team started off using the Kinect and switched to the Xtion Pro Live, once it was available, to get hardware-synced timing between a regular camera and the depth camera. The project didn't require the panning motor or microphone array of Microsoft's system.

NATO: Turkey wants use of air defense missiles

BRUSSELS (AP) ? Turkey's government requested the deployment of NATO's Patriot surface-to-air missiles Wednesday to bolster its defenses along its border with Syria.

Any deployment of NATO forces needs the approval of the alliance's governing body, the North Atlantic Council. But this is seen as a formality since NATO has already said it has plans in place to protect Turkey from a spillover of Syria's civil war.

"Allies will discuss this without delay," NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said on Twitter. He said the deployment would augment alliance member Turkey's air defense capabilities and "would contribute to the de-escalation of the crisis along NATO's southeastern border."

Fogh Rasmussen also noted that the deployment of the U.S.-built Patriots wouldn't mean imposing a no-fly zone over Syrian territory, a key demand of Syrian opposition groups. NATO has installed anti-aircraft batteries in Turkey twice before, during the 1991 and 2003 Iraq wars. They were never used and were removed a few months later.

In Ankara, Turkey's government said in a statement that "in face of the threats and risks posed to our national security by the ongoing crisis in Syria ... it has been decided to formally request from NATO that our national air defense be reinforced with the support of allied air defense elements."

German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle said he had told the German ambassador to Turkey "to receive positively such a request." Westerwelle says "it would be a serious mistake if we were to refuse defensive support to a NATO member country in a moment when this member country feels that it is exposed to attacks from outside."

mango pr asia ? open for business in hong kong and singapore

Mango PR has just returned from Asia having launched its Hong Kong office and also marked its first anniversary in Singapore.

First to Singapore where we celebrated with drinks at the rooftop Breeze bar at The Scarlet Hotel and then onto Hong Kong where we had drinks at Wyndham The 4th,? a jewel of a bar hidden away on Wyndham Road that has just opened to a chorus of approval from the Hong Kong media.

Internationally we?ve run numerous PR campaigns over the years. Beyond the UK market we?ve established a strong network of specialist regional agencies.? Over the past couple of years, mainly due to client demand, we have realised that there is an opportunity for us in Asia.

So we quietly set up our office in Singapore in September last year. The office is run by Romilly King who had already been living in Singapore and working in travel PR in Asia for over a year.?? Romilly and her team, Robyn Lee and Kamsin Kanwar, are already working with Intercontinental Hotels Group, Aqua Expeditions (launching their cruise on the Mekong in early 2014), Dorsett Hospitality International, Sukosol Hotels and Park Royal Pickering in Singapore.

Romilly King, Director Mango PR Asia

Our new Hong Kong office is headed up by Katie Harel, former Director of Communications for The Langham Hotel in Hong Kong and her number two, Vivian Woo, who was formerly at Langham Hospitality International.? Both of them are familiar faces on the hospitality scene and have a great deal of experience with the Hong Kong and China media.

Katie Harel, Account Director Hong Kong

Our founders Sarah and Lucinda set up Mango PR in 2004 with just a couple of accounts and on the way to Singapore worked out that since starting we have run campaigns for over 60 companies, including national tourism boards, travel companies, hotel groups,? travel guides, cruise companies and even the odd super yacht.? So it is safe to say that in the luxury travel and leisure market Mango PR is firmly established, with a proven track record.? More important of course is how many of those accounts have stayed with us since the early days ? for us, testament to the good service we are providing. ?Furthermore, by continuing to focus consistently on the travel and leisure markets, Mango PR brings to its clients a thorough understanding of the industry, and how to fulfill each client?s PR needs. But unlike other niche players, the wide experience and creativity of the Mango PR team allows us to develop highly innovative PR campaigns, often in conjunction with other consumer brands.

Now, with our offices in Singapore and Hong Kong in place, our headquarters in London, as well as our network of carefully chosen affiliates across Asia Pacific and Europe, Mango PR can guarantee the highest level of service to clients targeting the fast growing travel and lifestyle market across Asia, and to Asian clients wanting to grow their presence in Europe.
