Romney's '64 Rambler on the eBay auction block
It may not have driven up to the White House, but a nearly 50-year-old AMC Rambler now going across the eBay auction block has historic ties to two presidential campaigns.
According to a listing on the popular site, potential bidders have less than three days left to snatch up the 1964 AMC Rambler Classic once owned by former Michigan Governor George Romney. The one-time president and chief executive of American Motors had the white two-door when he made his run for the White House in 1968. His son Mitt used the car to launch his own bid for president in 2007 during a campaign appearance in suburban Detroit.

The paint is all factory and in excellent shape for its age,? said the current owner, a Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., resident who is selling it on eBay under the screenname ?socalsoda.? Known for his now out-of-style bipartisanship, the former business executive and politician acquired the ?64 Rambler after he had already left AMC to serve as Michigan governor. Romney was a champion of small cars, going so far as to blast American Motors? bigger Detroit rivals for producing ?gas-guzzling dinosaurs.?
It?s unclear how long he drove the six-cylinder coupe, though it was still in the family when Romney challenged President Lyndon Johnson during the 1968 campaign. The Michigan governor was considered a strong contender until being tripped up by his own explanation for becoming an opponent of the Viet Nam War, declaring that he originally had been ?brainwashed? by the military.

The white Rambler remained in the family until shortly before the senior Romney?s death in 1995 when he donated it to the Walter P. Chrysler Museum in Auburn Hills, Mich. Chrysler had purchased AMC more than a decade earlier. The coupe remained in the collection until just before Chrysler?s 2009 bankruptcy when, through a series of steps, it was sold to a collector in Northern California before being purchased by the current owner.

The current top bid as of Tuesday afternoon ? was $10,500. The auction will close at 9 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 22. It?s unclear whether any Romney family members are participating in the auction.
The Rambler features a 196 cubic-inch six-cylinder engine and, according to the current owner, is in good running shape, though he has kept it in a sealed garage unregistered since purchasing the Rambler.

As to Mitt Romney, it?s quite likely that he spent at least some time in the back seat of the ?64 AMC Rambler, as he would have been around 16 when his father purchased the coupe. In fact, the younger Romney and wife Ann received a later, blue model from the governor when they got married.

Human bones in backyard altar bought on eBay?

Some of the bones and a skull found Sunday in a Pasadena backyard are human, the Los Angeles Coroner's Office has confirmed.
A man who left the house Monday said that his sister's family had found the bones for sale on eBay, and that she purchased them for religious reasons. The man identified himself only as Jose, declining to give his last name.
Police said they were pursuing a trespasser when they spotted bones atop the outdoor altar. Steer horns and other animal bones were visible, along with the human bones, candles and incense.?
"The religious aspect of the case is not our focus -- it's the bones," said Pasadena Police Lt. Ed Calatayud.?
Human skulls indeed are listed for sale on eBay.? On Monday, for example, one described as suitable for dental study was listed at $710.
Jose said his sister practices Palo Mayombe, an offshoot of Santeria.
'The Saint of Death'
Studying images of the statues on the altar, an expert on Latin American folk religions saw different symbolism.
"What caught my eye was that the backyard altar was obviously primarily an altar to Santa Muerte, the Saint of Death ... whose cult has been mushrooming both in the United States and Mexico over the past decade," said R. Andrew Chesnut, professor of religious studies and holder of the Bishop Sullivan Chair at Virginia Commonwealth University.?
"What it really is, is a fusion of medieval Catholicism and native Mexican folk religion,? said Chesnut, the author of "Devoted to Death:? Santa Muerte, the Skeleton Saint."

Santa Muerte has continued to grow, despite condemnation from the Catholic Church and from the federal government of Mexico, Chesnut said.?
Santa Muerta is distinct from Santeria, but creation of personal altars is a characteristic among followers of both, and in some cases altars are adorned with bones, both animal and human.
"The bones themselves are often believed to have special powers,? he said.
The coroner's office took custody of the bones and skull discovered in the 800 block of North Oakland Avenue.?
At this point there is no indication of any crime, police said.? But the coroner will attempt to determine their origin.

Rome braces for influx of visitors as search for papal replacement begins
Cardinals gather to determine successor to Benedict as leader of world's 1.2 billion Catholics
Rome is bracing for the faithful to arrive for the election and installation of the cardinal who will succeed Benedict as leader of the world's 1.2 billion Catholics. The 85-year-old Pope Benedict announced his resignation earlier this month, stepping down at the end of this month, planning to retreat to a life of prayer in a monastery behind the Vatican's ancient walls.
Some of the faithful were dismayed that Benedict broke with the centuries-old tradition that popes serve until their last breath.
LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - The pontiff told cardinals that he no longer has the mental and physical stamina to vigorously shepherd the church.He smiled shyly at the sight of the crowd on Sunday, filled with pilgrims waving their countries' flags and holding up banners with words of support. One group of Italians raised a banner which read: "We love you."
:Thanks for turnout in such numbers! This, too, is a sign of the affection and the spiritual closeness that you are giving me in these days." He stretched out his arms as if to embrace the faithful from across the vast expanse of the square. The pope then asked the faithful to "continue praying for me and for the next pope."
Authorities used the traditional Sunday window appearance the event as a kind of trial run for the crowds expected to flock to the square in the coming weeks for the next pope's installation.
Benedict's successor will make his first papal appearance by stepping onto the central balcony of St. Peter's Basilica on the square, shortly after puffs of white smoke from the Sistine Chapel chimney tell the world the cardinals have made their secret selection.

A youth group Militia Christi (Latin for Christ's Militia) held a hand-painted banner asking the pope to stay. "We are asking him to change his mind. He is the good of the church," youth Giovan Battista Varricchio said.
No official decision has been announced on a date for the conclave to elect Benedict's successor, but the Vatican has suggested that it might start sooner than March 15, the earliest date possible under current rules, which require a 15-20 day waiting period after the papacy becomes vacant.
A debate has begun on whether such a change could be justified and whether it might benefit Rome-based cardinals, who because of their positions at the church's headquarters can count on their acquaintance with cardinals around the world.
"Church law should not be changed on a whim," the Rev. Thomas Reese, an American Vatican expert said. He said changing law "would be disruptive."

Spain's elBulli restaurant to reopen for lucky few
MADRID (AP) ? Spain's famous elBulli restaurant will temporarily reopen later this year as renowned chef-owner Ferran Adria trains actors for a movie based on his iconic but shuttered eatery.
Lucky gourmands will dine at the seaside Mediterranean landmark or in Hollywood if a decision is made to recreate the restaurant there.
ElBulli closed in July 2011 after maintaining an almost unattainable Michelin three-star status for over a decade. It was rated the world's best restaurant five times by British magazine The Restaurant, with Adria often cited as the planet's most talented and imaginative chef.
Adria told The Associated Press on Thursday that meals will be served to clients during the training sessions. A lottery system is possible for the general public, or Adria and movie executives could pick the diners.
