GOP Governors to Ignore Obamacare Ruling, House to Repeal it, Tea Party to Win in November

But as the hours passed, three reactions proved predominant, and conservatives began to coalesce around them. These three came from GOP Governors, the House leadership, and the very Tea Party that James Carville had pronounced dead earlier this week.

The governors, for their part, said they will ignore the Obamacare ruling at least until the November elections have passed. They wisely believe that the decision, and the legislation it upheld, will ?drive voters to dump President Obama in favor of Mitt Romney who has vowed to kill? Obamacare.

The House leadership reacted by announcing that they will hold a vote to repeal Obamacare after their July 4 recess. They?ve planned the vote for July 11, knowing that a successful House vote on repeal will create an opportunity to take the Senate in November and give President Romney the repeal he will ask for on day one.

Lastly, the Tea Party made it clear, ?The Supreme Court ruled against the American people today? We are putting all politicians on notice that we will not rest until this law is overturned in its entirety.? And anyone who doubts the Tea Party?s tenacity in doing what they say they?ll do need only look at what they did to Sen. Richard Lugar (R-IN) or the Wisconsin unions earlier this year. (Or you could always look at the significant number of former office holders who got their pink slips in November 2010.)

The bottom line: Conservatives are looking to November to set things straight. ?

Hundreds of homes destroyed in Colo. fire

The tens of thousands of evacuees in the Colorado Springs, Colo., area received word Thursday that hundreds of homes have been lost to an out-of-control wildfire.

A preliminary report indicates 346 residences on about 35 streets have been destroyed by the Waldo Canyon fire, Mayor Steve Bach said a late afternoon press conference, the Colorado Springs Gazette reported. The count isn't final and the numbers may change.

The fire, the most destructive in state history, was 10 percent contained. The cause hasn't been determined, said Jerri Marr of the U.S. Forest Service.

Earlier Thursday, Bach toured the heavily damaged Mountain Shadows subdivision.

"There was nothing left in some areas -- burned out foundations that were smoldering. It looked like a nuclear weapon had been dropped. It's as close to hell as I could imagine," Bach said after the morning tour.

Western wildfires seen from space

Along the fire lines, crews were still battling what the city fire chief had called a "monster."

"Something blowing up at Blodgett and Woodmen," reported one firefighter over an emergency communications scanner, according to the Gazette.

Blodgett Peak is near the U.S. Air Force Academy and crews have been battling flare-ups there for several days.

Crews are getting a break in the weather, with the area no longer under a "red flag warning," which means extreme fire danger.

On Wednesday, mandatory evacuations were ordered for the 3,000 people in the town of Crystola and part of Woodland Park after more than 32,000 people had to flee on Tuesday.

Those evacuation orders came as the fire moved down a ridge toward those homes, the Gazette reported, citing communications from an emergency services scanner. "It's huge," said the voice over the scanner. "I would estimate two-three miles in width."

In another scanner exchange, a request was made for more fire crews at Blodgett Peak. "As of right now I cannot hold this hill," a voice said from the fire.

Heavy smoke made for unhealthy air in and around the city. After jumping fire lines Tuesday, the towering blaze has now burned more than 29 square miles.

By late Wednesday, winds picked up and stirred flames, forcing some crews to retreat, the Gazette reported. C-130 planes used to bomb the fire with retardant were grounded.

Colorado Springs Fire Chief Rich Brown on Wednesday called the Waldo Canyon Fire a "monster event" that is "not even remotely close to being contained." The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Tuesday night, the community of Mountain Shadows, northwest of Colorado Springs, appeared to be enveloped in an orange glow.

People were "freaking out" as they fled Tuesday night, local resident Kathleen Tillman told the Denver Post. "You are driving through smoke. It is completely pitch black, and there is tons of ash dropping on the road."

"This is a fire of epic proportions," Brown said at a briefing Tuesday night.

"It was like looking at the worst movie set you could imagine," Gov. John Hickenlooper added after flying over the fire. "It's almost surreal. You look at that, and it's like nothing I've seen before."

Colorado is battling eight large fires, its worst fire season in history.

President Barack Obama will tour the Colorado Springs area on Friday to show his support, the White House said Wednesday.

The state's largest blaze is the 136-square-mile High Park Fire, which has destroyed 257 homes and killed one woman. That fire was triggered by lightning on June 9 and is nearly contained.

In Boulder, Colo., the Flagstaff Fire burned to within 1.5 miles of the southern edge of the University of Colorado campus. The 230-acre fire was 30 percent contained and "remains a threat to Boulder," Reuters quoted incident commander Rocky Opliger as saying.

Nationwide, 35 large, active wildfires were being fought. The bulk of them were in nine western states: Colorado, Montana, Utah, Wyoming, South Dakota, New Mexico, Nevada, Arizona and California.

Although the fire season got off to an early start in the West, the number of fires and acreage burned nationwide is still below the 10-year average for this time of year.

The Associated Press provided this roundup of other fires across the West:

• In Utah, a 72-square-mile wildfire has destroyed at least 56 structures, mainly homes, between Fountain Green and Fairview. That number is expected to rise. One person has died in that fire. A fire near St. George started Wednesday afternoon and had grown to 2,000 acres by midnight, forcing an undetermined number of residents near New Harmony and Bumblebee to evacuate. The fire was burning three miles north of Zion National Park, prompting park officials to close a canyon area popular with hikers known as the Kolob section.
• In southeast Montana, wildfires that have torched more than 200 square miles and burned dozens of homes spread farther Wednesday, with more evacuations ordered after a blaze near Roundup jumped a fire line. The growing Dahl Fire, which has burned more than 60 homes by one estimate, forced an unknown number of residents to leave their homes near its southern flank, on top of an estimated 600 people evacuated the day before. "That's one of the most dangerous fires in the history of Montana," Gov. Brian Schweitzer said.
• In Wyoming, a wildfire in the Bridger-Teton National Forest has grown from about 2,000 acres to 12,000 acres, or nearly 19 square miles, officials said Wednesday. Authorities worked to get campers out of the area.

Air Force says 31 victims so far in sex scandal

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A senior Air Force commander says 31 female victims have been identified so far in a widening sex scandal that has rocked the service's training command at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas.

Gen. Edward Rice, commander of the Air Education and Training Command, tells Pentagon reporters that a dozen male instructors are under investigation, and that nine of them are from the same unit ? the 331st Training Squadron.

Rice says the Air Force believes this is not a problem endemic to the nine training squadrons, and that it appears to be localized. He says the sexual misconduct occurred over the past two and one-half years, but the first woman came forward only a year ago.

The Air Force has launched an independent investigation across all training units.

If you like your gaming mice to be big, then that might be something that takes away from the comfort level of using the Roccat Savu.

That opinion aside, the mouse is wonderfully designed for a nice fit for your hand and the no sweat grip feels amazing from the outset. While we don?t have the problem of having a sweaty hand when gaming, it still feels great to have a perfect grip on the mouse. The grip was probably the most impressive thing aside from the sensitivity and accuracy and shouldn?t be underscored ? it?s a heck of a great feature to have and gives this mouse a really strong competitive advantage over the competition.

Whether you are playing FPS games, RTS games or even RPG games, having a good, sensitive, accurate gaming mouse is a must. For those of you that love achievements, there?s a software feature called ?R.A.D.? that will track anything you do with the mouse and hand you achievements based on your actions, such as how many clicks you?ve done to how far your mouse has ?travelled? in distance. It?s a ?nice to have feature? that wasn?t really all that big a deal, but we?re sure some of you might find it interesting.

The EasyShift[+] feature allows you to switch up your button settings to something completely different (and go back again) but it really proved to be one of those nice to have features that you may not end up using all that much.

Overall Impression

The Roccat Savu mouse is a really well designed product that should definitely be highly considered for purchase if you want a new gaming mouse. The pros are that it?s incredibly accurate, very reliable, fully customizable, looks slick and has an amazing grip. The cons are that it?s a shade on the small side for our tastes and some of the touted features such as the EasyShift[+] and the R.A.D. achievements were more tertiary features that at the end of the day weren?t all that important to us.

Overall, the Roccat Savu gaming mouse is a well-engineered product that performs amazingly for all PC game genres. You?d be very well off if you decided to make this mouse your full time device of choice and at a price of about $70 (USD) it?s priced pretty well against the competition.

Discovery of material with amazing properties

ScienceDaily (June 24, 2012) ? Normally a material can be either magnetically or electrically polarized, but not both. Now researchers at the Niels Bohr Institute at the University of Copenhagen have studied a material that is simultaneously magnetically and electrically polarizable. This opens up new possibilities, for example, for sensors in technology of the future. The results have been published in the scientific journal, Nature Materials.

Materials that can be both magnetically and electrically polarized and also have additional properties are called multiferroics and were previously discovered by Russian researchers in the 1960s. But the technology to examine the materials did not exist at that time. It is only now, in recent years, that researchers have once again focused on analyzing the properties of such materials. Now you have research facilities that can analyze the materials down to the atomic level.

Surprising test results

"We have studied the rare, naturally occurring iron compound, TbFeO3, using powerful neutron radiation in a magnetic field. The temperature was cooled down to near absolute zero, minus 271 C. We were able to identify that the atoms in the material are arranged in a congruent lattice structure consisting of rows of the heavy metal terbium separated by iron and oxygen atoms. Such lattices are well known, but their magnetic domains are new. Normally, the magnetic domains lie a bit helter-skelter, but here we observed that they lay straight as an arrow with the same distance between them. We were completely stunned when we saw it," explains Kim Lefmann, Associate Professor at the Nano-Science Center, University of Copenhagen.

They were very strange and very beautiful measurements and it is just such a discovery that can awaken the researchers' intense interest. Why does it look like this?

Explaining physics

The experiments were conducted at the neutron research facility Helmholtz-Zentrum in Berlin in collaboration with researchers in Holland, Germany, at ESS in Lund and at Ris?/DTU. They would like to get a general understanding of the material and with the help of calculations; and have now arrived at a more precise image of the relationship between the structure of the material and its physical properties.

"What the models are describing is that the terbium walls interact by exchanging waves of spin (magnetism), which is transferred through the magnetic iron lattice. The result is a Yukawa-like force, which is known from nuclear and particle physics. The material exhibits in a sense the same interacting forces that hold the particles together in atomic nuclei," explains Heloisa Bordallo, Associate Professor at the Niels Bohr Institute.

It is precisely this interaction between the transition metal, iron, and the rare element, terbium, that plays an important role in this magneto-electrical material. The terbium's waves of spin cause a significant increase in the electric polarization and the interaction between the ions of the elements creates one of the strongest magneto-electrical effects observed in materials.

"Through these results we found a new pathway to discover and develop new multiferroics," emphasize the researchers in the group. Now it is up to further research to determine whether this new effect could lead to new applications of these materials with the amazing physical properties.

Tropical Storm Debby expected to turn toward Texas

Tropical Storm Debby is already setting records; This is the first time on record that four named storms have developed in the Atlantic Basin before July 1.

As you can see in the satellite loop above,?heavy thundershowers are falling on the right side of the storm. Strong wind shear from the west has created a lop-sided storm. Hurricane Hunters flying through the storm found a closed circulation and estimated surface winds to be about 50 mph. The lowest pressure is actually on the left side of the rain shield.

Data from today's Hurricane Hunter flight won't be incorporated into the forecast models until this evening. But forget the models for a moment and look at what's actually happening.?If you look closely at the satellite loop above?you'll see a counter-clockwise spin in the clouds south of Louisiana.? That's low pressure in the upper atmosphere?which I believe will pull this storm westward. The trough along the eastern seaboard is probably?too far north to pull Debby toward Florida now.?

This storm will be moving near the "loop current" in the Gulf of Mexico, as seen in shades of yellow and orange on the image below. This deep warm water could allow the storm to intensify if wind shear?aloft?weakens.

This tropical storm will be out over the Gulf of Mexico for?several more days. The surrounding weather pattern and steering currents will change day-to-day. As I always say when dealing with tropical weather systems, "The forecast will likely change."

Taliban storm lakeside hotel in Kabul, 16 dead

Taliban militants armed with guns and rockets attacked a lakeside hotel near Kabul overnight, seizing dozens of hostages including women and children and killing at least 16 people.

The four or five attackers were also killed in the brazen assault on the Spozhmai Hotel that will exacerbate fears that insecurity is spiralling as NATO combat troops prepare to exit the Afghan war in 2014.

Around 12 hours after the attack began interior ministry spokesman Sediq Sediqqi said the assault ended with the death of the last militant. A number of the hostages were freed earlier by security forces.

On a balcony overlooking the lake, a birthday cake lay half eaten on a table surrounded by a dozen empty chairs, while nearby sprawled the bloodied body of a young man shot repeatedly in the chest. Like many of the victims, he was dressed in Western clothes, an AFP reporter said.

It was the latest in a series of sensational commando-style insurgent attacks that have targeted Kabul, the most heavily protected part of the war-torn country. They typically take hours to quell and strike fear into the public.

The Spozhmai is a haunt of the wealthy Kabul elite and on Thursday nights -- the start of the Afghan weekend -- is usually packed with families and mixed groups of men and women.

The Taliban attacked at around 11:30 pm (1900 GMT), when a group armed with rockets and Kalashnikov rifles stormed the hotel, said police.

At least one of the attackers detonated an explosive suicide vest, said Mohammad Zahir, the head of Kabul police criminal investigation department.

Witness Sharifullah, 30, had gone to the Spozhmai for dinner with a friend.

"I saw three armed men entering the area where people, families, had gathered. Moments later the shooting broke out, people panicked and started screaming," he told AFP.

"I threw myself in a ditch but saw bullets hitting a father, his son and wife who were sitting around a table near me.

"I am not sure if they survived," he added.

The standoff ended at 11:00 am, Hashmat Stanikzai, the chief spokesman for Kabul police told AFP, saying that all five attackers had died. The interior ministry confirmed only four attackers, but also said all the gunmen had died.

The ministry said 16 people, including women, were killed by the attackers. Twelve of them were civilians, three were hotel guards and one was a police officer, spokesman Sediq Sediqqi said.

The Taliban, who are leading a bloody insurgency against Karzai's Western-backed government, told AFP that the hotel was attacked because every Thursday there were "wild parties, drinking and prostitution".

Spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid accused foreign diplomats, and members of the US-led NATO mission and the Kabul government of attending the Thursday gatherings at the hotel.

Qargha lies around 10 kilometres (six miles) from central Kabul and its pleasant weather and greenery make it a popular picnic spot for daytrippers from the capital. The lake is surrounded by hotels, restaurants and wedding halls.

Sediqqi said at least 40 civilian hostages taken by the militants were freed before the end of the standoff.

A spokesman for NATO's International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) confirmed that its troops and Afghan security forces had responded to the assault.

NATO intends to withdraw its 130,000 combat troops from Afghanistan by the end of 2014, exiting the costly, decade-long war that has killed tens of thousands of Afghan civilians and more than 3,050 foreign soldiers.

President Hamid Karzai warned Thursday that attacks on Afghan police and soldiers were increasing, saying that 20 to 25 personnel were being killed every day.

He admitted his government and its Western allies had failed to bring peace to Afghanistan, which has suffered almost continuous conflict for the past three decades, saying "our land has not been secured, our homes, our people are not safe".

On Wednesday, a suicide bomber attacked a joint Afghan-NATO patrol in the eastern city of Khost, close to the Pakistan border, killing 21 people including three US soldiers.

Hotels, guest houses, government buildings, embassies and military bases in Kabul have been a frequent target of commando-style insurgent attacks.

In April, militants launched coordinated attacks on government offices, embassies and foreign bases in Kabul in the biggest assault on the Afghan capital in 10 years of war.

Greek-German soccer clash mirrors fiscal feud

Greeks were hoping against hope that their national soccer team would triumph over mighty Germany in the Euro 2012 championship, restoring lost pride to the debt-stricken country by getting one over its economic paymaster.

Friday night's quarterfinal fixture, in the Polish port of Gdansk, pits two nations against each other whose ties have rarely been so sour, so bristling.

Greece fans are seeking respect for their country after its humiliating economic collapse and Germany?s predominant role in lending bailout money ? along with strict austerity measures.?

"It's not good that sports and politics are together, but today we have no other choice," said Greece fan Michalis Kalotrapesis, wearing a white national team shirt and training top. "We are playing for our country and for our image in Europe and all over the world."?

Germany will be cheered on at the game by Chancellor Angela Merkel, a hated figure in Greece, who for many personifies the painful bailout conditions and the euro zone's strict approach to the debt-strapped state.

Merkel loves football and loves the German team. Earlier in the tournament, she went to visit their training base. She attends high-profile matches and was once photographed with bare-chested midfielder Mesut Ozil in the changing room.

'Bye-bye Greeks'
A crunch meeting between Merkel and other European leaders in Rome on Friday was moved up to an earlier start time so that she could attend the game.

"Bye-bye Greeks, we can't rescue you today!" Germany's top-selling Bild proclaimed on its front page on Friday in the colors of the Greek flag.

"Bankrupt THEM," blared leading Greek paper Sport Day.

Even the respected Greek daily Kathimerini drummed home to Greeks that this match is against a foe popularly blamed for saddling Greece with a punitive austerity program, chronic unemployment and years of deep economic recession.

"Whoever thinks today's match is just a game is wrong," the paper wrote, vowing it was "politics (maybe even war) by other means."

"To many Greeks, victory will represent the triumph of the weak against the wealth, might and arrogance of the powerful -- the victim would humble his executioner? If the Germans win, they'll see it as confirmation of their diligence, strategy, talent and thrift," it added.

Some German car manufacturers, like Volkswagen and Daimler, are making special arrangements that will allow their workforce on shift to watch the match.

Greece has never beaten Germany
Officials from Volkswagen told NBC News that employees will be able to leave early on Friday, but that workers will have to make up for the free time at a later point.

Greece have never beaten Germany but now would be the ideal time to do so in order to cheer up the public back home and give them hope that Greece can repeat their amazing run to the European Championship crown in 2004.

The chances are slim to say the least. The Germans, among the favorites to take the tournament title, go into the match on the back of 14 consecutive competitive victories stretching back to the 2010 World Cup.

For Germany, playing in Gdansk, which prior to World War Two was the German- and Polish-inhabited free city of Danzig, will feel like a home game.

Thirty thousand Germans are expected to travel to watch the game. Only 6,000 Greek supporters are expected. Most Poles say their hearts beat for the underdog.

Back in Athens, not everyone was drawn into the spirit.

"I couldn't care less," Said Panagiotis Pappas, 22, a chemistry student. "We're on the brink of disaster and all they care is about is football for Christ's sake."?
